MOTEL
January 27, 2011 – March 24, 2012

ok

Opening Reception:
Thursday, January 26, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The young photographer from Lausanne Catherine Leutenegger (*1983) opens the 2012 exhibition program of the gallery Kissthedesign with two series produced between 2003 and 2004 – still unpublished – exploring the topic of the motel in the swiss landscapes.

Her photographs let us feel the kind of uncanny, David Lynch produces in Lost Highway or Twin Peaks. Though we are not in the United States, we are far away from the large areas of Los Angeles, Washington or Texas as depicted by Wim Wenders. Catherine Leutenegger conveys the american and strongly cinematic charged world of the motel in our quiet swiss reality. The photographer brings us to the periphery of citys, close to the cantonal roads of the french part of Switzerland, in search of these strange atmospheres of the films noirs that impressed her photographic language.

WELCOME HOME BABY
Accrochage [VAUD 2011]
Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts, Lausanne
January 22 – February 20 | 2011

Opening Reception:
Friday January 21, at 6pm

Catherine Leutenegger's photo exhibition of babies in white cardboard boxes is both profound and troubling. That is the artist's intention.
The "babies" are actually polymer dolls eerily life-like. The first clue that they aren't real comes as you gradually notice that each baby is nestled in its own cardboard box. Leutenegger, who is a youthful 27, was clearly going for the shock that follows when you realize that you've been taken in by an extremely effective illusion, but her real goal is deeper than that.

"We are living in a time when parents are on the point of being able to pick the sex of their children and even determine the hair coloring and other features," Leutenegger says, "It raises questions about where the limits are."

WELCOME HOME BABY
October 14 – November 26 | 2010

Opening Reception:
Wednesday, October 13, from 6pm

Manufactured from vinyl and silicone, these ultra-realistic dolls were conceived in their slightest details. The expression of the face, the hair stuck by hand, the stuffed soft body, the folds of hands and feet. Everything gives that strange feeling that these dolls are true babies. These models are generally available with a wide range of extra-accessories such as clothes, the announcment of birth, curb chain, heart working on battery and even a breath device!

The designer of these dolls declares that - at the birth of her son - she felt the deep desire to immortalize him as a doll to keep a faithful memory of the first days of his life.

But who are buying these dolls? And what for? What is the point of replicating with high fidelity the anatomy of these new-borns?

Together with the steps I took to visit photographers' studios, it was essential for me to visit Rochester in the Northeastern part of the State of New York, to take a closer look at the headquarters of the Eastman Kodak group and the Kodak’s giant industrial park.

Many questions were at the heart of this desire of mine: What were the consequences of the technological digital reform for the Eastman Kodak group ? What is left today of the infrastructures that were dedicated to the manufacture of film and photo paper? How did the group react to the sudden onset of digital techonology? What were the consequences on the City of Rochester called "The Kodak City"?

Clearly photography is following a new road, and its future seems to be digital. By revealing the sites in which the traditional practice of photography evolved in a way, and by documenting the sites in which new technology is growing in the other way, my desire is to question the Photography’s very future but also to keep in memory what belongs / or will soon belong to the past. The Kodak City, MIP 2009
6e Mois International Photo, Dol-de-Bretagne, France | June 6 – June 21

Opening Reception:
Saturday, June 6, from 5:30 p.m.

Milledrogues.

The Kodak City | [Bourse Fédérale de Design 2008]

HORS-CHAMP "OFF-CAMERA" at Aperture Gallery in New-York
October 27 – November 3 2008

Opening Reception:
Monday, October 27, 6:00–8:00 p.m.

Catherine Leutenegger, the winner of the
Raymond Weil Club Photography competition 2007
will exhibit a selection of prints from her serie Hors-champ at the Aperture Gallery.

“ Hors-Champ” (“Off-camera”):“Hors-Champ” (“Off-camera”) is an invitation to discover a place that often remains unknown: where photographs are made—workshops and studios, darkrooms, development and print labs. The work behind the illusion so meticulously crafted by photographers in their studios is indeed rarely revealed. The realization of this project arises from a personal desire to explore, behind-the-scenes, the world of professionals in the photography field in my region, at a point in time when, obviously, photography is undergoing a deep change both in its technical aspects and its esthetical ones. In this digitalized age, what really occurs behind-the-scenes? What will become of studios and traditional photo labs? “Off-camera” is an homage to photography, its history and to the creators of images, and encourages the viewer to reflect on the future of this medium of communication.

A LA CONQUETE DE L’OUEST aux Ateliers de la Ville de Renens, Suisse

Prolongat
